Dafydd Allen was a Welsh National Opera Associate Artist for their 2022/23 Season. He studied at the Royal College of Music as a Baritone, graduating with a distinction in his Master of Performance, and has since made the transition to Tenor.
Most recently Dafydd has covered Malcolm in Mid Wales Opera’s production of Macbeth by Verdi, and covered Hotel Porter for Welsh National Opera in their production of Death in Venice by Britten.
He is in demand on the Concert platform, recently singing as the tenor Soloist in Elgar’s Apostles at St Asaph Cathedral, with St Asaph Choral society. Upcoming Concerts include Tenor Soloist in Mendelssohn ‘s Elijah for North Wales Opera and Tenor Soloist in Eternal Light, A Requiem by Howard Goodall for Ealing Choral Society.
In addition to Opera and Oratorio, and frequently gives recitals, Dafydd has a passion for art song, recently giving a recital with acclaimed musician Malcolm Martineau at the BBC Hoddinot Hall. Other recital venues include Cranleigh Arts, Beulah Church – Rhiwbina and Prideuaux Place – Cornwall.
Roles as a Welsh National Opera Associate Artist include Stronjek (Stage Technician) in The Makropulos Affair by Janacek. Boris in Cheryomuski by Shostakovich (WNO youth opera), the Agent in the World Premier of Blaze of Glory by David Hackbridge Johnson and Captain / Crook in WNO’s production of Candide by Bernstein.
He was the soloist in Welsh National Opera’s Return to Vienna concert tour, performing in many venues across Wales and England. The repertoire included songs and arias by Korngold, Strauss II, Lehar and Robert Stolz, accompanied by the WNO Orchestra.
Alongside performing Main Stage Roles, Dafydd has been involved in many different aspects of the company’s work including performing in a CD release at the National Eisteddfod, recording learning tracks for Male voice choirs, participating in Youth Opera Projects and recording a Music Video to support Wales participating in the Football World Cup in Qatar.
Prior to his time at The Welsh National Opera, Dafydd played the Father in the Royal College of Music’s International Opera Studio’s production of Hansel and Gretel. He’s played the role of Masetto in Don Giovanni for Opra Cymru, Speaker in Magic Flute for RCM’s Opera Studio and the role of William Minnock in the world Premier of "Madeleine" by David Hackbridge Johnson with Surrey Opera.
Dafydd was one of the Apostles in Elgar’s Apostles at the Royal Festival Hall with the London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Martyn Brabbins. He has worked on Mahler songs with acclaimed musician Roger Vignoles culminating in a performance in RCM’s Britten Theatre.
Dafydd was a finalist in the Welsh singers competition 2022, and has won several prizes at the Urdd Eisteddfod and National Eisteddfod of Wales.
